By using a hand-made 8x10" Bayer filter, I convert each photosite’s b&w luminosity values to 40x50 pixel color images.

Recently, I became interested how CMOS sensors work—specifically how each pixel technically only records one luminosity value for either the red, green, or blue channel. Our cameras (excluding Foveon sensors) go through an algorithmic process (usually multiple different processes) to "demosaic" these images by examining the adjacent photosites in order to infer what the other two channel's values are. This essentially means, at least 2/3rds of a digital image's color information is made up.

I wanted to explore whether a Bayer filter with an extremely low tolerance could still produce an acceptable color image. To do that, I used red, green, and blue permanent markers on a sheet of glass. Even with the uneven transmission of light and the spectral crosstalk of these hand-made photosites, when ran through a demosaic process, a color image still emerges.
