Pitch Frames Family Arrangement (Ongoing)
The black, glossy surface of the pitch is reminiscent of scrying mirrors used by mediums and occultists who claim to be able to use it to peer into the future or reveal hidden truths of the past.
To illuminate our constantly morphing reality, I adhere these photographs onto pitch used in the polishing of optical-grade lenses. This material, although looking and feeling like a solid object, is actually a highly viscoelastic substance that will slowly deform over a long period of time. I chose to incorporate liquid optical pitch because it directly suggests photographs are not stable representations of a moment in space and time either.
There is a feeling of tension and anticipation that occurs when gazing upon a form that resembles an ossified structure while knowing it is in a state of liquefaction. When looking into these framed objects, I want people to get a lingering sense of contemplative unease—much like how a memento mori functions. What becomes apparent when in front of these objects is they are changing imperceptibly along with you.
